Family history

The family name Van Gilse was first found in a declaration dated the 21st of September 1213 in which Willem , Count of Holland declared that Geertruidenberg could be named a city.

Two of the witnesses came from Baarle and were named , according to the in Latin written document “Godefriedus advocatus de Barle” and “ Johannes van Gilze” , in the accompanying translation of that time: Jan van Gilze.

In notarial records of the 1st of October 1400 and consequent years , also in 1457 , a Jan van Ghilse is mentioned as Alderman of the village of Gilze.

Often in these documents his alderman seal is found representing  a deer which from old appears in the Coat of Arms of the Van Gilse Family.

Dozens of documents out of the 15th century have been kept in St. Catharinadal of Alderman in Gilze with the same family name (in those days often written as : Van Ghilse or Van Gilze and sometimes also as Van Ghiels or Van Ghielse.)

That our Jan Jansz is a direct descendant of the above mentioned witness Johannes van Gilze or the Alderman Jan van Ghilse can not be proven , it is however remarkable that the Alderman all had the following Christian names:Jan , Pieter , Adriaan , Gerard and Hendrick .
